Sartene may be the epitome on Corsica’s towns, but Corte is a cornerstone of the island’s history and probably its true capital city in the heart of many of its inhabitants : Corte is at the very centre of the island and its history has been instrumental in creating Corsica’s soul.

Around the central square where Pascal Paoli sits imposingly, you walk about the old town, the steep lanes, the warm walls – the atmosphere is unique to Corte. The liveliest places are the Paoli square and along the Cours Paoli, the two key places. Follow the Colonel Ferracci Street that runs parallel to the Cours Paoli, and you’ll come across the chapel of Sainte-Croix and the Quatre-Canons Fountain.

The citadel and its belvedere are the most spectacular pieces of architecture in the old town, and you can’t help looking at them, wherever you are. The citadel was built in the 15th century at the top of a promontory 100 meters high. Don’t fail to visit the Museum of Corsica where you’ll get insight on rural Corsica’s culture and traditions in the Mecca of Corsica’s identity, before you take to discovering the neighbouring valleys.
