With its amazing gorges, Asco Valley is almost as famous as the two hikers’ favourites to the south Tavignano and Restonica Valleys...

The one-way road is to be taken only by those who know why. The village of Asco itself, half way to the far end of the mountain, is a charming place, with its slender steeple silhouetted against the bulky mountains in the background. There, you’ll come across old traditions and the industrious atmosphere typical of mountain villages where everyone must do everything without counting on help from the outside.

Then you get to the most mountainous and wildest part of the itinerary, Carrozzica pine forest, go on across the Caldane plateau to catch your breath, and a last effort brings you to the Haut-Asco, and the pointed roofs of its tiny recently-built chalets standing 1 450 meters high. This is a place for birds of prey, where you’ll be able to see most of the species present on the island. This is also the closest place, if you drive, to the highest peak on the island, the Monte Cinto, which towers at 2 710 high. In Haut-Asco you’ll also come across the GR20 waymarqued foot path that skirts round the Cinto.

Rock-climbing amateurs can take the path towards the summit of the Cinto by turning left in Carrozzica Forest, about ten kilometres after Asco.
